The Oroboro Modular interface

Oroboro Modular is a modular synthesizer for your DAW, and as a standalone app. Patch modules together on a zoomable canvas, play them from your keyboard, and hear every change the moment you make it. Every connection runs sample by sample, so feedback patches and audio-rate modulation behave like real circuits.

Two worlds of modules

  • 88 modern Oroboro modules: VCO, Wavetable, SVF and Ladder filters, Comb and Notch, Folder, Ring, Pluck, Resonator, Plate reverb, Delay, Chorus, Phaser, Compressor, Scope and more.
  • Generative tools built in: Clock, Euclid, Turing, Bernoulli, a 16-step sequencer with ratchets and probability, a Quantizer, and Expr for math formulas right in the patch.
  • 165 legacy modules that play Nord Modular G1/G2 patch files (.pch/.pch2), morphs and variations included.
  • Mix legacy and modern modules in one patch: signals convert on the cable, and pitch stays in tune.
  • Patches are compatible between iOS and desktop, so you can work on patches on your phone or tablet, and play them in your desktop DAW

Patch anything into anything

  • Every knob is an input: drag a cable onto it to modulate it, with its own attenuator.
  • Layers: play several patches at once, each on its own MIDI channel, with a master effects layer. Send audio, CV and gates from one layer to another, and save the whole setup as one project.
  • Samplers and granular synthesis from your own WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3 and Ogg files.

Built to be played

  • Up to 32 voices, mono or legato, with MPE.
  • 16 macro knobs to automate from your DAW, and 8 variations in every patch.
  • MIDI learn on any knob or macro.
  • On-screen piano, isomorphic and drum-pad keyboards. In the app, your computer keyboard plays too.
  • A 96 kHz engine for clean modulation and bright, alias-free highs.

Make it yours

  • Make module: turn any group of modules into a module of your own, and reuse it.
  • Write your own modules in Faust DSP: with Faust installed, edit a .dsp file and hear it change as you save.

Fair licensing

  • Try it free: the demo plays every patch, with no noise and no time limit. A license unlocks editing and saving.
  • Your license works offline, never expires, and isn't tied to one computer.

Release notes

  • The Mac download is signed and notarized by Apple: macOS opens the app and loads the plugins without asking you to let them through first.

  • Starts quicker with many third-party modules: what the modules folder holds is remembered from the last run, so a start reads only the module files that are new or changed. With a large folder the last patch could take half a minute to come back after the computer had been left a while.

How to install

Unzip the download. It holds the plugin as VST3 and as CLAP; install either or both:

  • Windows: the .vst3 into C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3, the .clap into C:\Program Files\Common Files\CLAP.
  • macOS: into /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/CLAP.
  • Linux: into ~/.vst3 and ~/.clap.

Then rescan plugins in your DAW. Without a license it runs as the demo; to activate it, see your account after buying.
